CARDIOLOGY

Development in Cardiology started with the establishment of heart function by William Harvey in 17th century. The 20th century saw the great achievements in Cardiology, noticeably, development of Electrocardiograph, Echocardiograph, Coronary care unit and starting of Cathlab with cardiac intervention procedures. Cardiac surgery also grew with first closed heart surgery for PDA in 1938, and open heart surgery for ASD closure in 1953. But, the scenario in Nepal was different. Nepal lagged behind in cardiology services with respect to developed world. Cardiac services first started in Nepal in Bir Hospital, including cardiac surgeries. ECG, ECHO and simple cardiac intervention procedures like pacemaker implantation.

CARDIOTHORACIC & VASCULAR SURGERY(CTVS)

A historically unique blend of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular speciality; a common platform for Cardiac surgeons, Thoracic Surgeons and Vascular Surgeons- that is the legacy of the department of CTVS ( a unit under the then Department of Surgery in TU Teaching Hospital until Magh, 2066). As diverse as the specialities look, there is an inherent commonness that keep them together, that they care for the organs that are concerned with tissue perfusion- the supply of oxygenated blood to cells.

CARDIOTHORAIC & VASCULAR ANESTHESIOLOGY

The Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia (CTVA) unit established on 26 Falgun 2068 was formally upgraded to the Department of CTVA on 20 Asar 2073. The department uniformly provides specialized anesthesia services for patients with cardiac, thoracic and vascular problems in and out of Operation Theater.
